This Spicy Green Tahini Sauce is a vibrant, creamy, and slightly spicy addition to your kitchen repertoire. The combination of cilantro and jalapeño brings a zesty, herbaceous flavor, while tahini adds a smooth, nutty richness. With the tang of fresh lime and the warmth of cumin** and coriander, this sauce is perfect for those who love a bit of heat. The versatility of this sauce makes it a go-to for drizzling over tacos, grain bowls, or using as a dip. You can also customize the heat level to your liking by adjusting the jalapeño and red pepper flakes.

Ingredient Highlights:

  • Cilantro: Cilantro: High in vitamins A, C, and K, cilantro adds a refreshing, herbaceous flavor. Cilantro may help detoxify heavy metals from the body and contains compounds that promote healthy digestion. Tip: To keep cilantro fresh, store it in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel in the refrigerator, or place the stems in a glass of water (like a bouquet) and cover loosely with a plastic bag to extend its shelf life.
  • Tahini: Rich in heart-healthy fats, calcium, and magnesium, tahini provides a creamy, nutty base while adding depth and body to the sauce. These nutrients support bone health and contribute to a healthy heart. Tahini is also a good source of B vitamins, which support energy production and brain function.
  • Jalapeño: Jalapeños contain capsaicin, a compound that may help boost metabolism. Capsaicin is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce pain and inflammation in the body.
  • Lime: High in vitamin C, lime juice adds brightness and acidity to the sauce, which enhances the other flavors. Vitamin C is essential for immune function, collagen production, and skin health. Limes also contain flavonoids, which act as antioxidants that help protect cells from damage.
  • Cumin & Coriander*: Both spices are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and can support digestion. Cumin adds a warm, slightly smoky flavor, while coriander (the seed of the cilantro plant) brings a subtle citrus note to the sauce. Together, they add depth and complexity, making the sauce more flavorful and aromatic.

How to Prepare Your Spicy Green Tahini Sauce Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cilantro
  • ½ jalapeño, seeded (or 1 whole depending on spice preference)
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • 1 lime, juiced and zested
  • 2 tbsp avocado oil or olive oil
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tbsp pickle juice or sauerkraut (optional)
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for extra heat)

Preparation

Step 1: Blend ingredients

Combine cilantro, jalapeño, tahini, lime juice, oil, cumin, coriander, and optional pickle juice or sauerkraut in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth.

Step 2: Adjust Seasoning & Consistency

Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. If you prefer more spice, add the red pepper flakes or leave the jalapeño seeds in for extra heat. For a thinner sauce, add water 1 tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached. To store, transfer to a container and store in the refrigerator for up to one week.

How to enjoy your spicy green tahini sauce

  • Drizzle on Tacos: Add a spicy kick to tacos, burritos, or quesadillas.
  • Dip for Veggies: Use as a zesty dip for raw veggies like cucumbers, carrots, or bell peppers.
  • Salad Dressing: Thin with water and use as a dressing for salads or grain bowls.
  • Sauce for Grilled Meats: Serve over grilled chicken, steak, or tofu for a flavorful, spicy finish.

Chef’s Tips

  • Adjusting Heat: Control the spice level by adjusting the amount of jalapeño or red pepper flakes. If you prefer a milder sauce, remove all jalapeño seeds or use just half.
  • Thinning the Sauce: If you’d like a more pourable consistency, thin the sauce with water or additional lime juice. Add it 1 tablespoon at a time until it reaches your desired thickness.
  • Pickle Juice/Sauerkraut: For extra tang, add a splash of pickle juice or sauerkraut liquid. This optional ingredient boosts flavor and offers a probiotic benefit.
